Foodie Friday: Dole Whip With Siesta Key Spiced Rum at Epcot Flower & Garden Festival

Welcome to this week’s Foodie Friday where we share our favorite food finds with our friends. This week we are taking a look back at the 2013 Epcot Flower and Garden Festival. It was the first year food booths were introduced to the festival and we couldn't be happier. Having food booths complimented the already fabulous flower and garden experience beautifully.

Dole Whip with Siesta Key Spiced Rum at Epcot's Flower and Festival

As you may already know I am a huge fan of Dole Whips. I've written about them ~~frequently~~ a lot! You can peruse my posts about Disney Dole Whips, HERE.

When it was announced that there would be an alcoholic version of the Dole Whip served during the Flower and Garden Festival I couldn't wait to give it a try even though I usually don't drink adult beverages. This was a special occasion so I gave it a try and not before asking the CM to go light on the rum. I wanted to be able to walk around the World Showcase not stumble.The weather wasn't in our favor and I knew we only had a few minutes to enjoy our Dole Whips so we grabbed a table with a view and settled in until the rain came. Rain is Florida can be biblical and it was. Up popped the umbrella and on went the ponchos while we finished our whips and enjoyed the view.

The Dole Whip with Siesta Key Spiced Rum was delicious with just the right amount of rum added to it. It still had the classic creamy cold sweet pineapple flavor but with a little kick in each bite. The rum they used is very good. It had just the right taste of spices and honey. What's even better is that it's made in Florida. I like that Disney is supporting local businesses.
I'll always prefer my Dole Whips straight without rum but this was a nice change and I look forward to having another one on our next Flower and Garden Festival adventure in May.

Siesta Key Spiced Rum is hand-crafted in small batches in Sarasota, Florida at our small, artisan distillery. We make our spiced rum by infusing our award winning rums with real spices and then adding honey for a bit of sweetness. We do not use any artificial flavors or sweeteners and you can taste the difference. Siesta Key Spiced rum is unlike any mass market spiced rums.

Hi Focused on the Magic readers! Today I'm going to share with you one of my must dos for every trip to Walt Disney World. It took me some time to decide a must do,

Disney in the Rain

A rainy day in Disney World doesn't mean all your magical plans will be a total wash out. Being prepared with umbrellas, ponchos and a list of alternative activities might help you discover that rain in Disney can actually be fun and offer magical moments that you may not experience on a sunny day.

Unless there is a possibility of a storm, most rain showers are in the afternoon and last a brief amount of time. In May it rained every day for the last 5 days of our 10 day trip. While most people headed for the gates we donned our ponchos or popped open our umbrellas and went with the flow making memories that will last a lifetime.

Downtown Disney is a great place to be when it rains offering many indoor activities. My son Peter and I were caught in a downpour there one Friday night. We decided it was a good time to play video games at Disney Quest which we hadn't done in a very very long time. I'm not a big video gamer so it's not on top of my list. I got to play the Wreck it Ralph game for the first time. Then we tried our hand at bowling at Splitsville along with a quick bite to eat. If it hadn't been raining I know we would have walked right by those magical experiences.

8 Great Walt Disney World Snacks

One of my favorite park pastimes is snacking. I have enjoyed delicious Walt Disney World snack offerings in just about all the resorts and definitely all of the parks.
It’s become a special treat for me, that is best enjoyed after I’ve spent hours touring the parks and need a quiet break or just watch a parade.

I haven’t as yet planned my days around snacking, except when I’ve met with fellow Disney fans for a Dole Whip meet.
With so many tasty delights to choose from I thought it best to limit myself to my absolutely couldn’t tour without it, best of the best.

#8 The American Dream - Layers of frozen strawberry, vanilla ice-cream and frozen blue raspberry heaven. This frozen concoction of ice cream goodness can be found appropriately, at the kiosk in front The American Adventure in Epcot’s World Showcase. On a hot day this is sure to cause brain freeze if enjoyed too quickly, so take it over to lake and enjoy a gentle breeze in the shade. $3.99 or 1 DDP snack credit.

#7 Mickey Rice Krispie Treats -- found in a variety of sizes, my boys always enjoyed the jumbo size as pictured here. I would go for the chocolate covered if I had a choice:) The smaller ones are 1 DDP snack credit and travel well. I usually stock up at the end of the trip to bring home as fun reminders of Disney.

#6 Carrot Cake Cookie – This is my favorite treat at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and one I’ve written about glowingly here. You can find it at either the Writer’s Stop or Sweet Spells. The Carrot Cake Cookie is perfect with a Writer’s Stop fresh brewed cup of coffee.

#5 Zebra Domes – These little tasty sponge cakes filled with Kahlua Liqueur and espresso coffee, dipped in milk chocolate have become a huge favorite with Disney fans and for good reason. I can’t visit Boma or Mara without tasting a few. This is one snack I might consider worth making a special trip to Animal Kingdom Lodge for. They can be found as a dessert item at Boma, or a snack item at Mara in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

#4 Black & White Ice Cream Soda - This classic soda fountain favorite from the 40’s can be gotten at Seashore Sweets on the Boardwalk in front of Disney’s Boardwalk Inn Resort or at Beaches & Cream at the Beach Club resort. It’s a delicious combination of chocolate syrup and vanilla ice cream. Seashore Sweets serves hand dipped Edy’s Ice Cream in single, double and ice cream sodas. Seashore Sweets also specialize in old fashioned candies, salt water taffy, fudge and other “Confections served with Affection.”

#3 Mickey's Ice Cream Sandwich - I love both the Mickey's Ice Cream Sandwich and the Mickey's Ice Cream Bar but the sandwich came out ahead as I think it's a little easier to eat in the Florida heat. I'm always racing to eat the bar before it melts and drips. The sandwich can be savored and enjoyed while watching a parade or just hanging out by the Swan boat landing.
I usually eat the ears first. How do you eat yours?

#2 M&M Chocolate Covered Apple- This mouth watering little candy coated M&M treat was found in the German Pavilion and quickly devoured by my son before I got a chance to take a snap of him eating it. On second thought his chocolate covered face wouldn't have been a very pretty picture. They are also offered at Goofy's Candy Kitchen located in Downtown Disney.

Goofy's Candy Kitchen is snack central for us when we're in Disney World. My sons spend their snack credits getting all kinds of goodies. We also enjoy watching as the CMs prepare delectable treats in the open kitchen. If you hang around long enough (as we often do) while they're making fudge you may get to sample it. Yum, fresh peanut butter fudge is divine!!

Captain Cook’s offers a self serve Dole Whip in pineapple or vanilla. At the Aloha Isle, you can get the famous pineapple flavor or vanilla or orange flavors. They’re served straight up in a cup or as a float. I prefer the cup whereas the rest of my family enjoys floats. Except Paul, who dislikes Dole Whips. Hard for me to believe but that's a whole other post!

Last but not least and not counted in my 8 GREAT snacks but is an old fave -- the Citrus Swirl which is officially back at the Magic Kingdom's Sunshine Tree Terrace. I can't wait to experience it once again!

When a snack attack happens to you while you are in Walt Disney World there are numerous delicious snack offerings in just about all the resorts and all the parks to choose from.

Disneylicious Dole Whips

Greetings Everybody! It’s time for Focused on the Magic's Foodie Friday Fare.

Maybe it’s just because I’m on a diet right now... Dreaming about delicious Disney desserts is calorie free and eating them is reserved for park visits so I haven't broken any diet rules yet:D
Dole Whips are the #1 topic that people ask me about so even though I've mentioned it before I'm just going to have to say it again...

Dole Whips are one of my favorite snacks in Walt Disney World and my favorite snack location to get one is in Adventureland's The Aloha Isle. This little kiosk in the mist of the Tiki Gods and next to the The Tiki Room offers up sweet, tropical treats and cool refreshments! However, for many Disney fans, Aloha Isle is not just a quick spot to grab a tasty treat, it is home to one of Disney World's most famous snacks: the Dole Whip!

So what exactly is this infamous dessert that everyone is talking about you ask? A Dole Whip is pineapple flavored soft-serve dessert served in a cup. Made with fresh pineapple and assorted reconstituted ingredients that melt in your mouth. The best part for DS is that they are lactose free! There are a few ways to enjoy a Dole Whip. I like my Dole Whip served straight up in a cup. My DH likes a swirl of pineapple and vanilla in a cup. DSs enjoy a Dole Whip float, which is served in pineapple juices! No matter how they serve it though I've always enjoyed it. Just don't take too long taking a picture of it:)

Aloha Isle also offers other items. You can enjoy orange or vanilla flavored soft serve, Coke or Root Beer floats, pineapple spears, soft drinks, fruit juices, and even hot drinks! This quick snack kiosk has outdoor tables and chairs or you can take your treats and sit by the Jungle Cruise wall and people watch. A fun way to take a refreshing break from hustle and bustle of the Magic Kingdom.

There's another reason I enjoy having a Dole Whip at The Aloha Isle. I like to "pay one forward" for Bawb each trip. By that I mean, I buy one for myself and one for a customer waiting in line. It started In May of 2008 when I attended a memorial/meet for the late Bob Varley a wonderfully funny witty DIS moderator and DISUnplugged Podcaster. At the memorial we were all talking about Bobs love of Dole Whips and how some DISers (I won't mention who;) weren't big fans of the tasty treat. Someone suggested buying one for someone else in Bob's memory as a sort of "pay it forward" gesture. That night I went to the MK and had a Dole Whip in his honor and bought a Dole Whip for someone on line with me. It felt good and I think Bob would've enjoyed it. If you should decide to try it, take a picture of your Dole Whip and post it on the DISboards thread, A Dole Whip for Bawb. It's one way of remembering and paying tribute to a great guy who is sorely missed.

What could better than Disney, food and photography? Well, of course a trip to Disney to have this delicious treat would...

This delicious treat came from The Aloha Isle in The Magic Kingdom. Mmmm. It was melting but it was still soooo good. You can also make your own at Captain Cook's Counter Serve Restaurant at the Polynesian Resort. Somehow they aren't the same. Maybe it's because I like to take mine over to the Swiss Family Tree House and hang out.

Family Favorite Walt Disney World Traditions

Traveling to Walt Disney World over the past 20 years our family has developed quite a few family traditions. I didn't realize we had so many until I started blogging about them. Some are the more traditional traditions and some are well, unconventional traditions.

The first family tradition on each trip is heading to the parks after checking in to our resort. The Magic Kingdom is our first park and POTC is our first ride. In Disney's Hollywood Studios we head right for The Great Movie Ride. The last night is always spent at The Magic Kingdom to see Wishes.

Food glorious food! Food is fodder for a whole series of traditions in our family. To be brief, the first two foodie traditions are Dole Whips and Mickey Waffles. You can read about both ad nauseam here on my blog. I ♥ Dole Whips and Mickey Waffles!

Gotta have a Dole Whip!

Just the other day I had a major craving for one. To satisfy the craving I had a Healthy Choice bar which is no substitute for a Dole Whip. Speaking of the real thing. I know there are recipes for making Dole Whips at home and there are home machines that can whip them up for you.
Maybe it's just me but I'd rather save my Dole Whip indulgences for times when I'm in Disney World.
There are just some things-that-should-stay-in-Disney.

You can find Dole Whips at The Aloha Isle in The Magic Kingdom's Adventureland. They serve up pineapple, vanilla, chocolate and swirl for $2.89 or 1 snack credit on the DDP.
The Wilderness Lodge has self serve machines but only vanilla or chocolate.
Or, you can find a self serve Dole Whip at Captain Cook's counter service restaurant in The Polynesian Resort's.
Dole Whips are refreshing, have a healthy dose of vitamin C, they're fat free, cholesterol free, lactose free and only 80 calories for a 1/2 cup serving. Not a lot of calories for a dessert. Walking around the park would burn that off.

Every time I'm at The Magic Kingdom I make it a point to stop by and have a Dole Whip. It's refreshing and it's lactose free. Most times it's late at night after the fireworks and during EMH. I pick a quiet table in the corner and just relax thinking back on the days activities. Sad another day has almost passed but looking forward to what tomorrow may bring. Maybe another Dole Whip:)
