Disney Wordless Wednesday: Happy Earth Day & Happy Birthday Animal Kingdom

Hi Disney photography fans. Welcome to The Disney Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop here at Focused on the Magic.com where each week we gather to blog hop, link up and share our #DisneySide Wordless Wednesday or Almost Wordless Wednesday Disney related picture posts.

This week's theme is all about Disney Nature. Disney Parks celebrates Earth Day every day, just the way Walt Disney would have wanted it, through numerous programs in the parks and in the community. To celebrate Earth Day and Disney's Animal Kingdom Park's birthday I'd like to share a few shots of The Tree of Life in Disney's Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World and a few animals that you might discover on one of my favorite rides, Kilimanjaro Safari.

The Tree of Life project was started in the late 80’s and opened on April, 22, 1998, Earth Day. This beautiful iconic symbol symbolizes the beauty, diversity and grandeur of our animal life here on Earth.

"You've probably heard people talk about conservation. Well, conservation isn't just the business of a few people. It's a matter that concerns all of us. It's a science whose principles are written in the oldest code in the world, the laws of nature. The natural resources of our vast continent are not inexhaustible. But if we will use our riches wisely, if we will protect our wildlife and preserve our lakes and streams, these things will last us for generations to come."

"I have learned from the animal world, and what everyone will learn who studies it is, a renewed sense of kinship with the earth and all its inhabitants."
~ Walt Disney

How will you celebrate Earth Day? I'll be planting seeds in my garden.

Friday

Flashback Friday ~ Kilimanjaro Safari

It's time for Photo Flashback Friday here at Focused on the Magic!

Time to once again dust off our Walt Disney World photo albums and take another look at some of our favorite photos from vacations past.

If you are new to the Flashback Friday Hop, Welcome! I hope you enjoy your visit. For those returning, Welcome Back! If you are new here and would like to join in on the fun, you'll find out how to at the end of this post. I would love to have you share your flashback photos with us.

This week we're taking a trip back again to Animal Kingdom to ride the safari in the rain. You may have seen these pictures in previous posts but it's a flash back and that's what we'll do.
These pictures were taken on a summer trip I took with Peter. I was reminded of the trip this week when once again Peter injured his patella, during this trip he injured his knee for the first time. He was in a wheelchair for the whole trip.

Throughout the week we had heavy downpours, not uncommon in Florida in the summer. They usually start late in the afternoon and clear out quickly.

The rain and pain didn't dampen his spirits though. We sloshed on. Usually if we're in the parks we just head for an indoor attraction to wait it out but on this day we were in Animal Kingdom close to the safari so we decided to give it a try in the rain. I know animals love the rain and I thought maybe we'd get to see some unusual activity.
Nothing unusual there. Rhinos never seem to stop eating, even in the rain.
This bird looked like he couldn't wait for the rain to stop, not much fun for him. Looking back the safari trucks were empty or had only a few people in them. We were the only two people in ours. If you don't like waiting, this is the best time to ride the safari!

The best part of the safari was when our driver stopped the truck to watch the elephants enjoying the afternoon shower. It was so exciting to see them rollicking in the rain and rolling in the mud.

Have a Magical Day!

Photo Flashback Friday ~ Flights Of Wonder

Focused on the Magic Flashback Friday LogoIt's Photo Flashback Friday! Time to once again enter the Wayback Machine and have another look at our old Disney photos.
Today's flashback photos are from a magical trip we took with my sister and her family. It was an eventful, magical trip with lots of lasting memories but one stuck out in my head. We were standing in front of Flights Of Wonder at Animal Kingdom in Disney World.
My son, nieces and nephews were all excited about the show, Flight of Wonder. They had read about it and thought it sounded interesting and wondered why it wasn't on our touring plans. What they didn't know was that my sister is terrified of birds.
Ever since we were little she's been creeped out by them. We had parakeets growing up and she saw the movie Birds and well somewhere along the way something must've snapped or bitten. We decided we didn't want to spoil everyones fun so my sister, who's a good sport, agreed to go in if we sat in the back. It had been awhile since I had seen it and totally forgot that sitting in the back doesn't mean you won't be close to the action.

*spoiler alert* Everyone was having a great time (even my sister) enjoying the show until the part where the giant bird swoops down over the audience. The audience cheered loudly while my sister gasped and choked back a scream! After the show we all agreed it was a great experience, even my sister!!!
Flights of Wonder is an interesting, educational and wonderful show. Don't exclude it from your touring plans..even if you are afraid of birds;)
I hope you enjoyed my
Flashback Friday Post!

This week's theme is...
Wildlife!

Tiger on the Maharaja Jungle Trek in Animal Kingdom, Walt Disney World
taken with a Nikon D200 and a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom Nikkor Lens

What could be more wild for Wildlife Wordless Wednesday than the beautiful Asian tigers in Disney's Animal Kingdom? I've posted these before and I even feature one of the tigers in my banner. So, you may be tired of seeing them. I just love looking at them and had to share them again.

These shots were taken on a very hot afternoon in August so there wasn't much playing going on. Occasionally this tiger would swat a beach ball in the water. Or play in the fountains.
The temperatures and humidity kept most folks out of the park that day. Even my camera fogged up with humidity that day!
Animal Kingdom always feels hotter than the other parks because the paths are more narrow and there's no breeze. It makes for a very good time to visit though. If you can handle the heat!

We take it very slowly and drink a lot of water. Stopping for ice cream before hitting the Maharajah Jungle Trek. After the parade and toward the end of the day the tigers are more active.Tiger on the Maharaja Jungle Trek in Animal Kingdom, Walt Disney World

Disney's Animal Kingdom Fitness Fun

You just have to smile! After coming back this morning from my "resolution walk/jog" at 6am in 16°, I spotted this cute post and video from Disney Parks. It warmed my heart (well that and a K-cup) to the idea of keeping to my New Years resolution. I won't be jumping through hoops as they do but I could certainly use a personal trainer to prod me along:)

The animals at Affection Section in Rafiki's Planet Watch, including rare domestic breed sheep and goats, have their own personal trainers and personal exercise programs, including agility, which has them jumping through hoops and over bars, and navigating through weave poles and tunnels

Have you made a running, jogging or walking New Years resolution? How is it going?
