Disney Quote of the Day

Today we're focusing on a delightful quote from Mary Poppins and a bit of Disney trivia as well.
"Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down" ~ Mary Poppins

The song and the lyrics have an interesting back story. Julie Andrews wasn't fully committed to the part of Mary Poppins originally. She did not like the song that was written for her, believing it did not have enough snap to it. The original song was called "The Eyes of Love". Walt Disney instructed the Sherman Brothers to come up with something more catchy.

Robert Sherman, the brilliant lyricist created a new song the following day with the help of his children. As he explained it, one evening after arriving home from work and while he and his wife Joyce were discussing the days events, she told him that the children had gotten their polio vaccines. His children recounted that it didn't hurt because the medicine was put on a cube of sugar and that they had swallowed it. The next morning he had the title of the song "A Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down".

A Spoonful Of Sugar Lyrics
Mary Poppins:
[Spoken]
In ev'ry job that must be done
There is an element of fun
You find the fun and snap!
The job's a game

[Sung]
And ev'ry task you undertake
Becomes a piece of cake
A lark! A spree! It's very clear to see that

A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down-wown
The medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way

A robin feathering his nest
Has very little time to rest
While gathering his bits of twine and twig
Though quite intent in his pursuit
He has a merry tune to toot
He knows a song will move the job along - for

A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down-wown
The medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way

[Interlude]

The honey bee that fetch the nectar
From the flowers to the comb
Never tire of ever buzzing to and fro
Because they take a little nip
From ev'ry flower that they sip
And hence (And hence),
They find (They find)
Their task is not a grind.

Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h ah!

A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down-wown
The medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way

Tiggerific Trivia ~ EPCOT's Living Seas

“We welcome you to The Living Seas. We welcome you to Seabase Alpha."
On January 15th, 1986 The Living Seas Pavilion opened at Disney World's EPCOT. It would be the third Future World Pavilion and a modern marvel with it's giant 5.7 million gallon saltwater tanks and coral reef tanks teaming with more varieties of fish than any of us had ever seen before.

The Living Seas was always a highlight of our day at Epcot. I've written about it a few times. You can see the posts here and here. As Guests we saw a movie and took a ride in the Hydrolator down to Seasbase Alpha where we would ride a Seacab through the coral reefs. In Seabase Alpha there were educational demonstrations, manatees, divers and dolphins.
No trip to the Living Seas was complete without a trip to the Coral Reef Restaurant which specializes in fresh seafood and an amazing view of the aquarium.

Fun Facts:

  • The Living Seas would be the third Future World pavilion.
  • The Living Seas is 203 feet in diameter with walls of 48 feet high.

  • United Technologies was the pavilion sponsor.

  • "Animated Atlas of the World," was the name of the short educational film about the ocean.

  • The aquarium is the 5.7 million gallons.

  • The aquarium contains nearly 3,500 individual specimens comprising approximately 65 different species of Caribbean reef fish.

  • The Coral Reef Restaurant windows are 8 inches and made of thick acrylic.

Tiggerific Trivia ~ Partners Sharing the Magic

Today I'm joining in on the Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia Blog Hop. It's fun to share and learn a little bit of Disney trivia each week. If you are a Disney fan I'm sure you know this but I thought I'd share, just in case you missed it in all your Disney trivia reading.

The bronze Partners Statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse is located in the hub of the Magic Kingdom and is one of the most popular photo spots in Disney World. I find it almost impossible to walk by day or night and not take a picture of it.
It depicts Walt pointing down Main Street, USA. Some believe he's pointing to the future and others believe he's pointing to the the Sharing the Magic statue that is usually located in Town Square, depicting Roy O. Disney sitting with Minnie Mouse on a park bench. Both statues were expertly sculpted by veteran imagineer Blaine Gibson who was also an animator on many classic Disney films.

Next time you're in the Magic Kingdom stop and take a closer look at some of the details. That is after you've taken a few pics.
Upon closer inspection of his tie clasp you'll notice the letters STR. The letters STR represent The Smoke Tree Ranch, a development in Palm Springs, California, where Walt Disney had a vacation home.

This fun WDW trivia is republished from an article I wrote for the DisneyPhotosBlog.

Disney Quote of the Day

This week we're focusing on a quote from Walt Disney himself.
"Mickey Mouse popped out of my mind onto a drawing pad 20 years ago on a train ride from Manhattan to Hollywood at a time when business fortunes of my brother Roy and myself were at lowest ebb and disaster seemed right around the corner." Walt Disney

What do you think would have happened had Walt Disney not acted on his doodling on the train that day? Do you think Mickey Mouse would have popped into his mind's eye another day?

Tiggerific Trivia ~ Mickey Mouse Friends

Disney Trivia, Mickey Mouse Hallmark Card ~ Love You Always
Walt Disney and J.C. Hall lives crossed long before they became friends.

Walt Disney moved to Kansas City with his family in 1911—nearly a year after J.C. Hall began growing his own bustling business in the very same city.

Although the two men never crossed paths in these early years, Disney worked as a paperboy and delivered daily to the home of Elizabeth Diddly, Hall’s future wife. Walt Disney and J.C. Hall eventually developed a genuine friendship after Mickey Mouse became a licensed character for Hallmark Cards.

This bit of trivia can be found on the Hallmark website.
