Ultimate Blog Party - 2014

Its time for the annual 5 Minutes for Mom Ultimate Blog Party! We love parties, so come on in and join us! My name is Deb and "Focused on the Magic" is where I write about our families adventures. We’ve been participating in the Ultimate Blog Party for few years now. Each year we've made new friends through the UBP and I am looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.

Do you like brownies? I made a fresh batch for my latest review. They are made with Crio Bru cocoa grounds which made them extra tasty. Try one;) You'll find we like to eat and talk about it here on the blog in a feature called Foodie Friday.

Happy Birthday Walt Disney

Today is the 110th birthday of Walt Disney! The man behind the mouse, creator of the happiest and most magical places on earth, Imagineer of the best animated films, and our beloved Disney characters. He left us an amazing legacy for generations to enjoy.

It is also my DS, Peter's birthday today. He came about sharing his birthday with Walt Disney in an unusual way. We chose this date. Really, no kidding!

Welcome to the Orange Magical Blogorail

Welcome to the first stop aboard the new Magical Blogorail Orange.  Enjoy the ride as we introduce ourselves, our blogs and share what inspired us to start our blogs!

Hi, my name is Deb, I'm a boomer mom to 2 wonderful college age boys (1 adopted with special needs from Russia and 1 biological) who have grown up to be Disneyfied young men. I'm a wife to an amazing husband, for 35 yrs!
Looking back, my earliest Disney experiences were of watching the Mickey Mouse Club on TV. I was a huge fan and even became a card carrying honorary Mouseketeer. Seeing Bambi in the theater for the first time made me cry. I loved my Snow White doll, Davy Crocket hat, Disneyland Viewmaster reels and any Disney books or comic book I could find to read. When The Wonderful World of Color came on TV I sat mesmerized as Tinkerbell and sometimes Walt Disney himself brought us to foreign lands on nature adventures or into space. Seeing The World's Fair exhibits of IASW and Carousel of Progress was very exciting and inspired my interest in technology. It was a magical childhood growing up with Disney:)

When we started a family it was natural to include Disney in our lives with books, toys, and movies. We started traveling to WDW with our first son in 1990. We went twice a year until Peter our 2nd DS joined our family then it would be once a year. When Peter joined us on his very first trip he barely spoke English. I remember he literally fell backward when he saw Genie in the lobby of the Contemporary. Fortunately, Peter wasn't thoroughly traumatized and enjoyed many character meetings.
I was always very active in the online Disney communities starting around 1990 just before our first trip. There I met Deb Wills, Lou Mongello, Pete Werner and many more wonderful Disney friends. We would exchange all sorts of travel and planning information much like we still do today. We'd get together for meets and chat on IRC. The exchange of information was very helpful for all of us.

We've enjoyed taking DCL cruises on the Magic twice and The Wonder twice. We became DVC members at The Boardwalk Villas in 1997 through a resale. For the past 21 years we've celebrated Peter's citizenship, his Gotcha Day, many birthdays, anniversaries and a wedding in WDW. I've traveled to Walt Disney World with the whole family, DH & I sans kids, myself with both boys, myself and each DS, with extended family, friends, teens, college boys and solo too.
The Grand Floridian,The Yacht Club, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Contemporary, Villas Wilderness Lodge, Beach Club Villas, Saratoga Springs Spa & Resort, Port Orleans, and the Boardwalk Villas are my favorite resorts.

You'll find Focused on the Magic is filled with my photography and an eclectic collection of my foodie driven thoughts in dining reviews and experiences all focused on the magic in Disney.

Thank you for joining me today. I hope you enjoyed the ride and learned a little bit about me! See ya' real soon! ºoº

Minnie Monday ~ Mail Forwarding

Most Disney World fans know by now that Minnie's Country House in Mickey's Toontown Fair has closed. I've been wondering where oh where is Minnie's mail being forwarded to? It has been widely reported that the cottage will remain on property. If it is it's an undisclosed location thus far. Minnie's cute little country cottage holds many cherished memories for my family. Even her little backyard was a magical place especially when Minnie appeared to greet Guests. The big move is filled with uncertainty and we're a little concerned. Will her precious possessions, like the portait of Clarabell Cow with the Hidden Mickey and the cool breeze refrigerator filled with cheesy food find their way safely to a spot in The Fantasyland Expansion? A transient Minnie will be making guest appearances throughout the Magic Kingdom until the spring of 2011. At that time she'll meet and greet Guests at the Town Square Exposition Hall. I just hope Goofy & Co. aren't entrusted with Minnie's move. We all know how Mickey's kitchen renovation went!

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Foto Friday ~ Animal Kingdom Safari Rocks

Nikon D200, Nikkor 18-200 VR @ 90mm, f10, ISO 400
Traveling along in a very bumpy safari truck I was able to snap a shot of these rock signs. They can be found just before the giraffes favorite feeding area. The attention Disney gives to theme detail always amazes me. Wherever possible they use authentic articles or in this case words. Ng'ombe is Swahilia for cow or beef and ziwa means lake.
Even with the safari truck bouncing and guests jostling you can get some interesting shots especially with a tele lens that has VR (vibration reduction).
My favorite time to ride the safari is right after it rains. The colors, animals and foliage seem to perk right up after the typical afternoon shower. When is your favorite time to take the safari ride?

Foto Friday ~ Frontierlands Notoriuos Banjo Brothers and Bob

Even the birds get into their act!

We caught the The Notorious Banjo Brothers and Bob performing on the steps of the pin store in Frontierland at The Magic Kingdom. They draw quite a crowd and shouldn't be missed. If you hear them strike up the band, pull up a rocker and settle down for a spell. With just three instruments (two banjo players and a sousaphone) they produce an incredible variety of music. You'll hear a mix of old cowboy tunes, bluegrass and familiar Disney tunes. All that and they're comedians too!

Look for the Notorious Banjo Brothers and Bob's 20 minute performances in Frontierland.
