Today is Foodie Friday at Focused on the Magic and I have a special treat for you. I was an absolute addict to Walt Disney World's Turkey Leg. Since 2004, it was one of the things I looked forward to most for each trip. Even my children included them as part of their must dos at Walt Disney World.
There was a tradition with these turkey legs, you see we would head over to Hollywood Studios ride TOT and RR, then walk over to the marketplace and grab two turkey legs for us to share. We never could finish a whole one. Over the years, we started purchasing them at Epcot and Magic Kingdom as well.
Well, when we moved to Kissimmee to make our daily Disney dream come true, one of the very first things we did was to go get a turkey leg. My husband had even been talking about it since we decided we were going to make the move. So with a Bud light in one hand and a Turkey Leg in another, we snapped a photo during our first days of living here.

From August to December, those turkey legs were a part of our new magical life. We had one about every other week, and if there was any extra we would put it in a baggie and bring it home for later. But all that changed in November 2012.
We were thrilled to be amongst the first visitors to Magic Kingdoms New Fantasyland. During our very first visit, a dress rehearsal soft opening, we made our first trip to Gaston's Tavern.

Upon walking in, we knew we wanted to try a selection of the goodies they had. But in particular one thing caught our eye, the Roasted Pork Shank. As my husband is a proud meat eating Nebraskan, he was all for taking the plunge and trying this new offering.


When they handed us our order, a chocolate croissant, cinnamon roll, LaFou's Brew in a souvenir cup, and our Roasted Pork Shank, we were surprised at the size of each item. But the Pork Shank, wrapped in waxed paper, oozing juice and grease, with it's peppered skin, looked mouth wateringly good. I had a hard time letting Patrick have the first taste. 

With my first mouthful I knew that Turkey leg was being replaced. Never have I had such a tender piece of pork. It literally just falls apart, and is so moist and seasoned nicely.
Since my first tasting of the Roasted Pork Shank at Gaston's Tavern, I have not had a single turkey leg. I get cravings for this wonderful piece of meat, not to only eat at the park, but I also purchase a couple to bring home and serve with rice pilaf, green beans and a roll. Yes, one of the luxuries of living 2 miles outside of the parks.

Just in case you were wondering, at the time of writing this article, the cost for a Roasted Pork Shank with tax is $9.46.

  1. Wow! What a great post! My family enjoys the Turkey Legs too (to me, they taste more like ham). So, I'm anxious to try the Roasted Pork Shank too.

  2. I have never been brave enough to try eating something that may be bigger than my arm ;) The pork shank sounds good though, and the picked-clean bone is a good sign. I will have to try one on my next trip.

  3. The Roasted Pork Shank does look so delicious! I have to try it next time. I had the Cinnamon Bun with a LaFou Brew at Gaston's and it was so good!!

  6. Thank you Heidi for saying that, I thought I was the only one who thought that! My kids think I am crazy for saying that because they don't like ham but like the Disney Turkey legs!

  7. LOL! I'm not a huge meat-eater in general. I don't really care for turkey OR ham. But, the Turkey Legs at Disney remind me of a smoked ham - something straight from a butcher shop = GOOD meat. Sure, it's kinda greasy - but it just tastes YUMMY.

  9. Now I am hungry!! Seriously, though, I have a somewhat strict diet and these are one of the best choices at Disney for eating a protein meal. They taste great and I can walk to my next ride while grubbing down on this baby! Thanks for the great post!!!

  11. Lol, I am too! The Cinnamon Roll I had didn't have a lot of icing on it or at least I didn't notice. I think it's better than the old Main St Bakery bun too which was my favorite!

  13. I saw several people enjoying these during my last visit. Unfortunately, no Bud Light for him to pair this with at Gaston's, huh? ;)

  15. Nope, just a LaFou brew which is really good but not even close to a real brew. That sure would make a nice addition to the menu Disney, if you are reading;)
