Tiggerific Trivia ~ EPCOT's Living Seas

“We welcome you to The Living Seas. We welcome you to Seabase Alpha."
On January 15th, 1986 The Living Seas Pavilion opened at Disney World's EPCOT. It would be the third Future World Pavilion and a modern marvel with it's giant 5.7 million gallon saltwater tanks and coral reef tanks teaming with more varieties of fish than any of us had ever seen before.

The Living Seas was always a highlight of our day at Epcot. I've written about it a few times. You can see the posts here and here. As Guests we saw a movie and took a ride in the Hydrolator down to Seasbase Alpha where we would ride a Seacab through the coral reefs. In Seabase Alpha there were educational demonstrations, manatees, divers and dolphins.
No trip to the Living Seas was complete without a trip to the Coral Reef Restaurant which specializes in fresh seafood and an amazing view of the aquarium.

Fun Facts:

  • The Living Seas would be the third Future World pavilion.
  • The Living Seas is 203 feet in diameter with walls of 48 feet high.

  • United Technologies was the pavilion sponsor.

  • "Animated Atlas of the World," was the name of the short educational film about the ocean.

  • The aquarium is the 5.7 million gallons.

  • The aquarium contains nearly 3,500 individual specimens comprising approximately 65 different species of Caribbean reef fish.

  • The Coral Reef Restaurant windows are 8 inches and made of thick acrylic.

  2. I enjoy the Nemo theme but sure do miss the Hydrolator ride to SeaBase Alpha. It's so great that it's now entertaining a whole new generation.

  3. One of my favorite things to do in The Living Seas is search for Hidden Mickeys! There's usually one to be found somewhere on the aquarium bottom- the CM divers change rocks around periodically to have the Hidden Mickey show up in new spots. I've also seen Hidden Mickeys in the manatee area, on the white boards or among the papers hanging on the wall.

  4. I also liked the Living Seas. I miss the way it was, but the Nemo ride is kinda cool now.

  5. That was long before I started going to Disney. I'm a bit sad about missing out on that, but I do enjoy all the Nemo stuff & especially Turtle Talk with Crush! Thanks for linking up your "controversial" trivia this week, Deb! ;)

  6. I like both. I loved The Living Seas - but, as a mom with little ones, I also really enjoy the transformation to The Seas with Nemo & Friends. We enjoy the ride and strolling through the aquariums looking at all the sea life.
